Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

Syllabus, chapters and courses

What is this exam?

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) admits students to Navodaya Vidyalayas — fully residential schools run by the Government of India — primarily at Class 6.

Eligibility

Applicants must be studying in Class 5 in the same district for which they are applying, with reservations for rural-area students.

Age criteria

Born between specific years set each year — typically 9–13 years old at the time of admission.

Exam pattern

Three sections: Mental Ability Test (50 marks), Arithmetic Test (25 marks) and Language Test (25 marks), completed in 2 hours with no break between sections.

Syllabus

Mental Ability draws on pattern and figure-based reasoning; Arithmetic and Language map closely to the Class 4–5 NCERT syllabus.

Preparation strategy

Because Mental Ability carries the most marks, timed practice on pattern-recognition question types pays off more than additional arithmetic drilling once the basics are solid.
